A Building That Says "We Care"

UF Student Healthcare Center

In 2020, we embarked on creating a cutting-edge facility meeting the well-being needs of the UF community. In partnership with CannonDesign, our mission for the University of Florida Student Health Care Center (SHCC) extended beyond convention. We aspired to foster an environment that nurtures the well-being of the students it serves.

The 1931 Infirmary Building at UF had become cramped and outdated. The project's challenges reached beyond the expansion of its physical space. During stakeholder sessions, a shared aspiration emerged: the SHCC should promote well-being, not just treat illnesses. This vision led us to pursue WELL Building Standard certification. The design includes abundant daylight, biophilic elements, circadian lighting, and health-conscious HVAC and plumbing systems.

The outcome marks the first WELL-certified university student healthcare center in the US. The momentous design also emphasizes engagement with the outdoors via tiered gardens and a rooftop terrace.

Advanced HVAC systems and negative pressure rooms demonstrate flexibility for future infectious outbreaks while functioning as a normal outpatient suite. The design also prepares for future expansion, allowing for a 50% increase in gross square footage.

WELL certification, forward-looking design, and adaptability to evolving healthcare needs all ensure the UF Student Health Care Center will continue its tradition of putting the well-being of students first for generations to come.
