Flexible Workplace for Fast-Changing Needs

In today’s fast-paced world of Information Technology, UF’s needs have intensified and multiplied, and their team has grown in response. Quick expansion of the department led to inefficiently distributed teams and dated and inflexible workspaces. 

Enter Walker Architects to create a state-of-the-art workplace designed not only to support the fast-changing needs of the team and the University, but also to attract and keep top talent in the industry.

The two newly refreshed floors in Gainesville’s Ayers Plaza include flexible workstation areas visually connected to private offices and enclosed meeting and conferencing spaces. Glass walls create connection and share natural light from the building’s limited windows.

We went back to basics and drew inspiration from old-school computer technology. The “8-bit Architecture” design concept found its way into the interiors through a vibrant, pixelated floor pattern. Each floor has a distinct identity defined by the bright, punchy color palette.

Team members and their guests are more comfortable than ever, with welcoming lobbies, soft seating, and open, centralized lounge spaces to gather and relax. A variety of furniture and spatial options ensure that the full range of the staff’s needs can be supported, whether it’s for private reflection, focused work, dynamic collaboration, or social connection.

The renovation and expansion of the Reitz Student Union, built in 1967, expanded facilities, services, and programs supporting the University of Florida’s diverse campus community, increased energy efficiency, reduced operational costs, and greatly enhanced comfort and functionality.

Phase 1, the 100,000 sf addition, included entry and food court renovations, meeting rooms, lounges, dance rehearsal studios, a ballroom, and offices and support space for the Center for Leadership and Service, the Department of Student Activities and Involvement, the Office of Multicultural and Diversity Affairs, GatorWell Health Promotion Services, and student clubs and organizations.

Phase 2, the 50,000 sf renovation, included new energy-efficient windows and doors, restoration of exterior surfaces and structural components, replacement and upgrades of electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems, and upgrades to interior finishes and lighting. 

Careful phasing ensured that the Reitz continued to serve UF’s 50,000 students throughout construction.
